According to Ukrainian authorities, the Russian military launched a massive airstrike on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, in mid-June 2025, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens. The attack lasted for more than nine hours, from night through the next morning, forcing residents to seek shelter underground.
According to Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, 440 drones and 32 missiles were launched toward Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Moscow Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 147 Ukrainian drones. This tactic represents a renewed attempt to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defense systems and could signal a pattern of future attacks.
A ballistic missile struck a nine-story apartment building in Kyiv, extending damage to 27 districts. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a 62-year-old American was among the casualties. Member of Parliament Lesia Vasylenko posted on social media that she "woke up in a complete nightmare," describing the collapse of entire buildings.
Drone attacks were also reported in Odesa, where one person was killed and at least 10 injured. Klymenko said that rescue teams continue to search for survivors and provide aid.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks as "pure terrorism." He accused President Vladimir Putin of launching large-scale strikes simply because "he can afford to continue this war," adding that "terrorists should feel the pain—not ordinary peaceful people."
Zelensky had hoped to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump during the ongoing G7 Summit, but Trump's visit was shortened due to the escalating crisis in the Middle East. This shift may hinder Ukraine's efforts to secure additional U.S. support. However, the United Kingdom and its allies are expected to announce additional sanctions against Russia on Tuesday as part of continued pressure.
The latest airstrikes highlight Russia’s increased focus on urban targets and the ongoing difficulty in achieving a ceasefire. Continued international response and diplomatic pressure will be essential in shaping the future of the conflict.
