Weakened Yen and Rising Tourism Demand Fuel Inbound Boom

This represents the fastest-ever milestone of surpassing 20 million arrivals since the statistics began and is a pivotal moment for Japan’s tourism industry.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), June alone saw 3.3778 million foreign visitors, the highest number for the month on record.

Challenges: Tokyo-Centered Tourism vs. Regional Distribution

Most travelers still focus on the three major metropolitan areas—Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. Expanding tourism to regional areas remains a pressing challenge. The government and local authorities are working on boosting local airports, improving transportation, and enhancing multilingual support.

Outlook

The fastest-ever milestone of exceeding 20 million inbound visitors and the record-high ¥4.8 trillion in spending are positive signs for Japan’s economy. Future focus will be on delivering high‑quality tourist experiences and sustainable tourism models.
